The first U.S. intellectual history job for next year (starting Fall 2008) has already been posted. It’s at San Francisco State University, where the history department is seeking someone “for a tenure-track assistant professorship in United States intellectual and cultural history, specializing in the period from after the Civil War to the present.” The ad specifically mentions that the successful candidate should be able to teach an “undergraduate course in intellectual history from the Colonial period on.” View the posting here.
I do not see positions like this one very often; as an intellectual historian and former San Franciscan, it almost brought me to tears. Let’s hope that it’s the first of many!

Mike,
You’d be perfect for this position! So stop helping them advertise 🙂
Imagine, a new tenure home just as your book comes out. And the Pacific breeze in your face.
Very cool.
