Voices from the Past: The Studs Terkel Archive
It’s one thing to know, intellectually, that César Estrada Chávez (1927-1993) led the United Farm Workers in California in the early 1970s. The Catholic Chávez, a union leader and labor organizer, served at the front of this group in nonviolent protests about the working conditions of agricultural laborers. It’s another to hear the soft, humble voice of Chávez talk about his life story, in 1973, to Louis “Studs” Terkel on the latter’s radio program. Read more
