Introduction Having recently returned from my second tour of Australia, I would like to set forward a conceptual framework for thinking about the primary divisions in what we will call, without any interrogation of the term, the “Australian character.” Based on my observations, it seems clear to me that we are witnessing a major evolution of the Australian population into two general “types” – footy-directed Australians, and cricket-directed Australians.
