Rev. Richard J. Neuhaus passed away this past Thursday, January 8. His NYT obituary is here. Whether you appreciated him or not, future historians dealing with politics, culture, the intellectual life, and the Catholic Church in the United States will have to reckon with Fr. Neuhaus’s activities—especially from 1990 and onward. Fr. Neuhaus founded the influential conservative periodical, First Things. The NYT not surprisingly called his regular column there “caustic.” Although I was not necessarily a fan, I think that adjective is a bit harsh. Here is an appreciation page on Fr. Neuhaus at First Things. This picture page is enlightening—providing the sense of change associated with his life, and the breadth of history in which he participated. – TL
